Spasmodic Dysphonia

Spasmodic Dysphonia, also known as voice dystonia and medically known as laryngeal dystonia is a disorder of the voice.

Involuntary muscle contractions around the vocal chords can cause a strained voice, occasionally with an audible tremor. As with most forms of dystonia the symptoms can vary from person to person and other symptoms include a very quiet voice sounding like a whisper or difficulty in ‘getting words out’.

The patient would normally be referred to an ear nose and throat specialist who may offer treatment with injections of botulinum toxin.
